AI agents for restaurants: what's real in 2026
Restaurant phone calls split into two jobs: reservations and takeout orders. Vendors usually specialize in one.
What vendors document today
- Slang AI answers calls, handles guest questions, and manages reservations across platforms like OpenTable, Yelp and SevenRooms. Slang AI product page source via search extract
- SoundHound's OASYS platform handles phone, drive-thru and kiosk ordering, integrates with POS and menu systems, and is multilingual. SoundHound restaurants page source via search extract
- Loman's own blog says it takes full phone orders with payment and pushes them to POS systems including Toast, Square and Clover. That's a vendor claim about its own product. Loman blog source via search extract
Checklist before you buy or build
- Does it book into the scheduling system you already use, or just take messages?
- What triggers a hand-off to a human (emergencies, angry callers, pricing questions)?
- Can you review call transcripts and outcomes?
- Start with after-hours or overflow calls, then expand.
- Reservations or orders? Pick a tool built for the one that rings most.
- Does the order go straight into your POS/KDS, or to staff?
Our view (opinion): Full-service spots with mostly reservation calls and takeout-heavy spots usually need different tools.
